TOP LINE SPEAKERS ON RETAILING @ THIS FC CHAMBER BREAKFAST

Dear Members and Guests,
Hervey Bay Chamber Breakfast – Wednesday 29 September, 2010
at 6.45am for a 7.00am start at the Boat Club, Buccaneer Drive Urangan
RETAIL FORUM
Speaker(s):
Wade James, Founder of the Rush Surf Retail Chain
Craig Manley, McDonald’s (Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Gympie)
Adrian Hewton, Flash Harry
Wade James – Wade is the 40 year old founder of the Rush Surf Retail Chain. Rush originally started in Bundaberg with one store and Wade has built this up to 36 stores spread throughout Queensland and into New South Wales and the Northern Territory. Recently Rush entered into a conditional agreement with listed surf retailer Billabong International Ltd for Billabong to purchase Rush’s chain of stores. Wade has spent his whole life in retail, operating in both regional and city markets, in a heavily competitive industry.
Wade will outline his experiences in building up the chain and talk about retailing in a regional context in the current economy
Craig Manley – One of the disciples of the big red clown. Craig graduated from University of Queensland in 1988 with a Bachelor of Commerce. He did three years in the finance industry as a credit analyst with Westpac before deciding to take his career in a different direction. In 1991 Craig applied to McDonalds to become a store owner. He bought his first McDonalds store, Eagle St Pier in Brisbane, in 1992 and then Albion in 1996. He moved to Bundaberg in 1999 and currently owns four McDonalds franchises spread across Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Gympie.
Adrian Hewton – Hervey Bay’s very own Flash Harry. Adrian has extensive business history in both South Australia and the Northern Territory before moving to Hervey Bay and purchasing Flash Harry’s. He has opened stores in Bundaberg and Maryborough and is refining his importing operations.

MONEY ANGELS FOR YOUR BUSINESS – DO YOU QUALIFY?
What is an Angel Investor?
Angel investors are wealthy individuals who invest in high risk, early stage ventures by reserving a portion of their total investment portfolios to provide emerging companies with seed and startup capital through direct, private investments. Their goal is to achieve higher returns than the typical public markets provide. Most angels are active investors – who contribute their time and experience, as well as offer introductions to valuable contacts essential to the company’s success – because they enjoy the thrill of helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses. To maximize the value added, most angels specialize in industries or technologies they understand, and invest only in companies within close geographic proximity.
What is an Angel Group?
Angel investor groups vary in structure, from formal to informal. Formal groups follow strict participation requirements that guide members’ minimum investment activity and event attendance. Some groups pool members’ capital to make investments on the group’s behalf, while others allow individual members to invest in specific deals of interest.
What do you look for in companies?
We invest in companies that offer exceptional opportunities for high returns on investment. This usually implies companies with the potential to achieve high growth, strong market position, and sustainable advantages. We generally invest in companies that we believe have the potential to grow to more than $50 million in annual revenue within five years. This should be in either a developing market or in an existing market with national scope.

TRADES & SERVICES ZONE IN THE FRASER COAST, WHAT DOES IT ALLOW YOU TO DO?
FRASER COAST COUNCIL
and the confusing Trades & Services Zoning application.
Word is out from a reliable source that there will be clearer defined uses under this zoning instead of the current instead of ‘see how we feel on the day’ approach by council when looking to use the land/shed for a trade or service.
It is not before time that this is to happen to give a clearer picture to both the developers and the incoming tenant or buyer of such zoned land.
Currently there is no incentive for anybody to go forward with sale contracts or business commencement in a timely fashion as it is left to council to make decisions that from experience are fraught with huge crippling delays and expenses.
No wonder council crys poor from lack of funds from developers.
‘There is also a concern that the majority of councillors are women, who are good at what they do generally in council but who perhaps do not full understand the complexities & risks of development’ it is said.
Increasing charges to developers is certainly not the way to go & just destroys any incentives necessary to move forward .
We have heard all of this before from the spin doctors in council.
Let’s see where this all takes us over the next few months
