An 8.5% increase in passenger numbers at the Hervey Bay airport in the past 12 months would strengthen Council’s case for increased services to the Fraser Coast.

A total of 169,893 passengers moved through the airport en route to and from Sydney, Brisbane and other destinations.

Fraser Coast residents and tourists continued to take advantage of Virgin Australia’s direct flights from Hervey Bay to Sydney, with an increase of 16,824 passengers in the past year.

Qantaslink flights to Brisbane also increased, up by 3,389 passengers.

“The figures show that air travel is still popular despite the tougher economy,” Fraser Coast Mayor Mick Kruger said. “It also shows that there is room for expansion.

“If the trend continues we will have a good case to pursue more services on existing routes; more routes, especially a northern service linking the Fraser Coast to the Mackay and Townsville regions; or bigger aircraft servicing existing routes.”
