ARTICLE BY MARYBOROUGH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

March 10th, 2010

A wee drop of pain for a lovely bit of long term gain
MB CHAMBER LOGO

At this morning’s Maryborough Chamber breakfast we heard that our region is the most disadvantaged in Queensland. If you have a child looking for their first job you would already be aware of our problems. We also heard about the CEDE project which will develop regional employment prospects and improve our ability to attract long term sustainable industries.
To achieve economic development we need a vision, a plan and resources. We are lucky that the hard work is done on the vision and the plan. All we need is some resources. The University of Southern Queensland,  the Fraser Coast Regional Council,  the Maryborough Chamber of Commerce, and the Urban Development Institute of Australia (Fraser Coast) have all committed funds to get the research centre up and running. There are other groups who will come on board in the next month.
Your Chamber wants to go the next step. We have received considerable, and unexpected, praise for our leading role in supporting this project. The surprise was that a conservative Maryborough was embracing the need to change and improve our economic base.
The Chamber has set up a CEDE fund where we will raise $25,000 which will guarantee that the project goes ahead. Any money donated is fully tax deductible.
And what a start we have! Three small, visionary and energetic businesses have thrown in $500 each.
Anne’s Lingerie
Toast
Mango 4 Office Technology
Anne, Vince and David you are bloody marvellous. Chamber members you immediately need to get into some great underwear, walk down and have a fantastic coffee and…….well maybe print something.
There are so many important short term causes were we can all make a difference today. Please do not ignore them in favour of what we request. We ask that you take a small percentage from your marketing budget and allocate it to this long term regional project.
This is not a fund raising exercise. It is a Fraser Coast development exercise which will benefit everyone.
If you would like to join Anne, Vince and David or if you would like more info, simply  click here and let us know.
A NOTE BY THE EDITOR
THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE AND GROUPS WITH THE BEST OF INTENTIONS IN CREATING JOBS.

AT THE END OF THE DAY ALL THESE VISIONS, PLANS, GROUP DISCUSSIONS, NETWORKING, GOOD INTENTIONS, RESOURCES, SOCIALIZING, CLUB FUNCTIONS, BREAKFASTS, TALKFESTS  CAN CREATE  AN OVERLOAD  AND  AMOUNT TO NOTHING AT ALL UNLESS THERE ARE REAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR JOB CREATION.
THE BEST WAY IS TO CANVAS INDUSTRY AND COMMERCE DIRECTLY WITH WHAT THEY ARE AFTER AND GO AND GET IT FOR THEM SO THEY CAN OFFER JOBS.
ALSO FAST TRACK PROCESSES WITH COUNCIL ON DEVELOPMENT APPLICATIONS AND MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE FOR THESE DEVELOPMENTS TO PROCEED IN A TIMELY AND COST EFECTIVE MANNER.

ALL THESE WELL INTENTIONED GROUPS AND COUNCIL NEED TO TAKE NOTE

EXAMPLE OF A TELSTRA BUSINESS AWARD WINNER

March 10th, 2010

AN EXAMPLE OF A PREVIOUS TELSTRA AWARDS WINNER

Investment in staff, technology and community keys to rapid growth

Telstra business awards, nominate yourself for the Telstra business awards, Telstra business awards

Canberra-based consultancy, Point Project Management was only founded in 2006, but has grown to become one of Australia’s largest specialist project management consultancies.

Within a short time, the company has won a slew of major construction projects and expanded its presence with offices in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Perth.

According to founder and Joint National Principal of Point Project Management, Michael Snare, embracing the latest in interactive IT tools, minimising overheads, and utilising highly efficient ISO accredited business processes has enabled them to offer the highest quality and proactive service at exceptional value for money.

Investing in staff and the community is also vital to their success, one such example was committing to raise nearly $100, 000 to help an employee receive treatment for cancer

Point’s successful business model was recognised by the judges of the Telstra Business Awards last year, awarding them the National Winner of the Panasonic Australia Medium Business Award.

According to Mr Snare, the win was just one benefit the company realised by participating in the Awards.

“The process of entering gave us an introspective assessment of our business. We had to focus on key issues such as where we are going to be in five years.

“As a result, we revised our business plan and added more detail about what we wanted the business to achieve in the next five to ten years.”

Another advantage was the extensive media exposure that Point Project Management gained from its win in the Awards, something that smaller businesses often struggle to achieve on their own.

“We had so many people telling us that they had seen us in the newspaper, which was really exciting. Having people congratulate us and acknowledge our achievements is an amazing feeling,” he explained.

“Following the win, we also saw an instant change in the demand for our services. We were receiving phone calls almost every day in the weeks following our win from potential clients and customers with new opportunities,” Mr Snare said.

“For our customers to know that we are at a level to win such a prestigious Award gives them added confidence, which is something that can’t be understated.

“Not long after our success, we won our first open tender, something we hadn’t been able to achieve prior to the Telstra Business Awards. While we can’t attribute this directly to the Awards, I’m sure that it was a contributing factor.”

Importantly this year, Telstra has made some significant improvements to the program that can reward every business that enters.
